Ubongo and Tanzania’s Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology Explore New Opportunities to Strengthen Educational Access and Impact

On October 10, 2024, we were honored to host key representatives from Tanzania’s Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology (MoEST) at our Dar es Salaam headquarters for a day of insightful discussions. This engagement marked a significant step toward building a collaborative relationship aimed at expanding educational access and enhancing learning experiences for children across Tanzania.

Exploring Shared Goals in Education

The meeting provided MoEST representatives with a behind-the-scenes view of our content creation, delivery, and impact measurement processes. As they toured our studios and reviewed Ubongo’s educational programs, discussions centered around 10 key areas for collaboration that directly align with Tanzania’s educational priorities.

These included:

Teacher Training and Resources: Expanding teacher training to support educators in using our content to enhance classroom learning. The Ministry

  • expressed interest in co-developing resources to make lesson planning easier and more effective, especially in rural areas.
  • STEM Education and Digital Literacy: Promoting STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) skills and digital literacy from an early age. MoEST is interested in partnering with us to introduce coding, robotics, and basic digital skills that align with Tanzania’s goals for a technology-driven future.
  • Inclusive Learning for All Abilities: We share a commitment to making learning accessible for children with diverse needs. The Ministry praised our inclusion of characters with disabilities and expressed interest in further content adaptations to meet the needs of all learners, particularly in underserved areas.
  • Last-Mile Connectivity: Bridging the gap for students in remote areas who may have limited access to internet and TV. MoEST is keen on exploring ways to expand our reach through radio, offline resources, and community-based distribution to ensure every child, regardless of location, can access quality learning materials

A Vision for Inclusive, Impactful Education

Our shared mission of inclusive and impactful education was evident throughout the discussions. The Ministry voiced strong support for our efforts to offer educational content in local languages, recognizing that culturally relevant, mother-tongue-based learning leads to better educational outcomes. The Ministry also expressed interest in our community-centered approach, which has proven effective in driving learning gains in literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional skills across diverse regions.

A Path Forward: Establishing a Collaborative Framework

We are eager to formalize this partnership and work together toward shared educational goals. To do so, we plan to establish a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will outline specific areas of collaboration, ensuring coordinated efforts across multiple government bodies. In the coming months, we will co-host a stakeholder workshop with MoEST, bringing together key representatives from the education sector to discuss the MoU and finalize strategic plans.

This promising collaboration has the potential to make a lasting impact on Tanzania’s education landscape by equipping teachers, empowering students, and bringing high-quality, accessible learning to all corners of the country.

Stay tuned for updates as Ubongo and Tanzania’s Ministry of Education work together to make quality education a reality for every child in Tanzania!

Ubongo is the proud recipient of this year’s MIP SDG Award, given in recognition of its progression toward inclusive and equitable quality education (SDG Goal 4). The award will be presented in association with the United Nations at the upcoming MIPTV Spring International Television Market, taking place in Cannes from 8-10, April 2024.

Established in 2020 to support the UN’s Decade of Action campaign, the prestigious MIP SDG Awards recognize organizations and initiatives within the media industry that are driving progress on the SDGs through editorial, campaigning, and business practices.

Ubongo has been honored as this year’s winner for its visionary role in providing quality multimedia educational content and transforming learning experiences for Africa’s next generation.

Mwasi Wilmore, CEO of Ubongo, said: “We are deeply honored to receive the MIP SDG Award in recognition of our commitment to providing inclusive and equitable quality education across Africa. This award reaffirms our dedication to leveraging the power of media to transform the learning experiences of millions of children, empowering them to realize their full potential.”

This year’s awards attracted submissions from 24 countries, with the winners selected from over 70 entries by an international jury of social responsibility experts, producers and past winners, including: Mo Abudu (CEO, EbonyLife Media), Troy Armour (CEO, Junk Kouture), Márcia Balisciano (Chief Sustainability Officer, RELX Group), Amanda Hill (CEO, We Are On Purpose) and Hyeonza Hong (Founder and Director Green Goals Singapore).

Alongside Ubongo, a visionary free-access environmental footage library, Open Planet, will be awarded this year’s MIP SDG Innovation Award in recognition of its original contributions to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Caroline Petit, Deputy Director for the United Nations Regional Information Centre for Europe said:

“The number and diversity of entries for this year’s edition of the MIP SDG Awards demonstrate that the audiovisual industry can be an important ally in many areas of the UN’s work: from sustainable development to human rights. Broadcasters and producers have a role to play in creating and distributing factual, scientific content, and also in motivating and inspiring people to care, through stories.”

Lucy Smith, Director of MIPTV, added:

“Television’s power to accelerate progress has never been more needed. This year’s winners have both successfully harnessed resources to reach wider audiences with powerful storytelling from trusted sources and are just two examples entered from an incredibly encouraging range of inspiring, progressive initiatives from across the industry – work we will continue to provide a platform to highlight.”

The award will be presented by the United Nations’ Deputy Director for the United Nations Regional Information Centre for Europe, Caroline Petit, in a special keynote session featuring interviews with Ubongo CEO, Mwasi Wilmore, and Open Planet’s Director of Operations, Emily Renshaw-Smith, to showcase the story, purpose, and progress behind each initiative on Tues 9 April at 11.45 in the Palais des Festivals.
