UBONGOER PRINCIPLES

We live and work by them!

Ubongoers

Ubongoers are lifelong learners. We see challenges as opportunities to learn. Feedback and constructive criticism are welcomed, since we can only learn when there is room for improvement. We aren't about being the "best"... we recognize that if we keep learning we can always be better. We grow our Ubongos every day.

Ubongoers aren't afraid to jump in 100%. We care deeply about what we do, and we show it. We value grit, passion and hard work over talent or "smarts." We dive deep into the details, we ask questions, we nerd out, and we do whatever needs to be done to achieve our outcomes. No task is beneath us.

Ubongoers take action, then we quickly put everything to the test to see What works and what doesn't. We share our work early and often: with each other, with our users, partners and with our critics. We bring forth our ideas with passion, then we welcome chances to be proven wrong. We don't believe that anyone has all the answers... but that we all have the ability to find the answers if we're willing to try, fail and keep moving forward.

Ubongoers want to get the most out of every shilling, every hour, and every spark of creativity... so we can bring more and more to the kids we serve. We strive for sustainable growth, so we think before spending or using, to make sure that the kids we serve get the most value possible out of the money, time and effort that we expend.

Ubongoers work together, and we put the team before the individual. We support and respect each other, by listening deeply and reaching out to help (or for help). We collaborate across teams to innovate and create, and we believe that our collective minds and effort will create exponentially greater change than each individual on his or her own.

Ubongoers deliver. We commit to getting things done, and then we do whatever it takes to make it happen. We never settle for good enough--our brand stands for quality, and we want all of our work to live up to that. We know that things are not done until they're delivered to the fullest quality, so we see things through to the outcome.

Ubongoers think outside of the box. We constantly strive to find better ways to work, create and deliver results. But we don't innovate for the sake of invention or newness. We innovate to achieve outcomes, and to simplify the path to these outcomes. Instead of asking "what" we ask "why," then we figure out "how."

Ubongoers take ownership. We aren't afraid of responsibility: we own our mistakes and failures along with our successes. We work on behalf of the entire organization and our mission. We don't push blame to others... when things go wrong, we push forward to fix them and grow.

Ubongoers speak our thoughts. We respect each other and create a safe space to speak up with praise and passion, as well as criticism and feeback-- which we direct, with positive intent, at the work and not the person. We must each speak out when we see or hear that wrong has been done, or if we believe we are on the wrong path. All Ubongoers have the responsibility to voice their thoughts, and should do so to teammates and leaders at every level without hesitation.

People with a growth mindset believe that their abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work-brains and talent are just the starting point. This perspective creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. At Ubongo, we value people who have a growth mindset and can persevere as much as we care about talent and skills. We have big audacious goals and this requires not only hard work, but consistency and commitment to always learning.

Ubongoers are working to transform learning for kids in Africa... and as such we are all teachers. We each take responsibility to ensure that our products serve and teach our audience. We are also teaching each other constantly, so we can share what we've learned and grow together.

Ubongoers put the kids we serve first: before our own egos, our pre-conceived ideas, and our personal preferences. We listen to kids, and we take their feedback as seriously as that of any expert. We believe to our core that enabling and empowering kids to better their own lives and communities will lead to long term and transformational change in the world.

Ubongo Logo

Ubongo is Africa's leading producer of kids' edutainment. As a non-profit social enterprise we create fun, localised and multi-platform educational content that helps kids learn, and leverage their learning to change their lives. We reach millions of families across Africa through accessible technologies like TV, radio and mobile phones.
